"An ugly stone is one that has no faces," Sonam explains.

He must cut almost every boulder by striking it with a sledge hammer or, for smaller pieces, with a mallet. He builds slowly, up, cutting and recutting, piecing together rocks like a three-dimensional puzzle, wedging them tight with small rocks-with faces, tamped into position with a hammer, all with flat surfaces pointing out. His walls the, too, have faces.
